im trying to run my minecraft at 2 gigs of ram but its only running at 499 MB It really bothers me to have it run at that much ram because I do redstone stuff in other worlds besides that I have 16 gigs of ram so I CAN run it at 2 gigs (I try to allow it 2 gigs with this code: -Xmx2G -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC -XX:+CMSIncrementalMode -XX:-UseAdaptiveSizePolicy -Xmn128M) im on 1.8.1 (I can run minecraft at 2 gigs on 1.7 but I like 1.8 for redstone stuff)

Some people actually say you can reconfigure java to make it work better, like if you have more ram then it will help, but the story is, ram is just one part of a thing. If you have horrible video card and a weak cpu, big amounts of ram wont help. And as for the whole java thing, minecraft shouldn't even use your whole amounts of ram, its takes everything by itself

Allocating too much means other tasks have less RAM to work with. Don't allocate too much, is all I am saying.

.... Are you serious? The screenshots is showing that OP doesn't have a problem. Everyone likes to think ram is the most important thing on a computer, when really it's not.

OP it probably wont use more than that, because that is all it needs. It only uses what is needed up to around 512mb iirc. If you mean it won't go any higher than 499, then uninstall Minecraft, and Java, then reinstall them.

I agree with you Magicman88999.

Dog_ Sword289 requested help allocating more and as far I can see he did not request a war between two factions yelling at each other what's best to use. As Dog_Sword wrote he has 16GB of RAM at his disposal. He can do well without a bit more for other tasks bur as I belive he launches Minecraft to play it and does not need it to anything else in that moment.

I have the exact same specs as you Dog_Sword289 (at least those you wrote) and I can therefore probably give you a good idea how to solve this. I personally use Magic launcher to allocate more and it's also super easy to set up and use. Download it here:

http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/ma ... ds-options

Put it on your desktop so you can easily access it.

Run it.

Before logging in go to setup.

Go to advanced...

and just fill in the number of MB (note MB, not GB) you want to allocate in the specific box. Then run like normal minecraft!

NOTE: You have to run Minecraft through Magic launcher but it's just the same. Only difference is of course the launcher so any conflicts with Minecraft versions does not appear.

I hope this will solve your problem Dog_Sword289.

Good luck!

My framerate is fine with running .5Gb ram.

My entire computer has 1Gb ram, and 10 YEAR old CPU/GPU's.

I get 50+ fps most of the time, except for some very nice maps.. And mods crap on my performance too.

Minecraft is alot like battlefield 2142, its beautiful, and very well optimized to run on ancient computers.

Do you have proof for this? Because I have proof saying more or less what thenubslayer2000 said. I ran some tests, with a 32x texture pack (Willpack), on a vanilla version of the client, and with 8 chunks rendered. RAM really didn't slow me down as I added more, but it didn't speed me up, either. Not only that, but it would have slowed me down had I allocated more than 6GB of it to Minecraft. Also, for actual results, I did boot up the world, fly around in it for a couple of minutes, and then return to the same spot. I also just now did a test where I was still using -Xmx512M & -Xmn64M and instead had a 16-chunk render distance (the maximum in Vanilla Minecraft) and was still able to use Minecraft effectively (as in, 150+ fps).

Test with -Xmx512M & -Xmn64M

Test with -Xmx1G & -Xmn 128M

Test with -Xmx2G & -Xmn 256M

Test with -Xmx3G & -Xmn384M

Test with -Xmx4G & -Xmn512M

Test with -Xmx5G & -Xmn640M

Test with -Xmx6G & -Xmn768M

NamechangeYou only need 1Gb of ram for minecraft... No excuse for a reason you'd need more. I've never even hit 500Mb.

...What planet do you live on? I allocate 4Gb to the game so I can use extended (non-vanilla) render distances, play with immensely large texture packs, and use shaders. I don't know a lot of people who DON'T use more than 1Gb.

Earth. I use 1Gb, 16 chunks, highest settings, shaders, and a texture pack and it maybe gets to 60% usage of 1Gb.

I routinely use 512MB of my 12GB of RAM...

Anyways...

OP, I recommend you download the Java JDK as opposed to the JRE. I believe SherwoodGaming also linked to it. but I will also link it here.

Good luck with your problem!

You really don't need more then 1GB man, that's all my minecraft has. Even if I'm on FTB mod packs they only take up to like 600mb with 120+ mods on. Really you don't need that much ram for minecraft to work just fine, and if its stuck at a number either the counter is broken, or its literally not taking anymore memory than it says witch is most likely.

Possible Steps to take
Step One:
Update Java

Step Two:
Check allocated RAM in modded profile

Step Three:
Run Minecraft with Modded Profile, Record FPS, RAM usage, etc.,

Step Four:
Check allocated RAM in vanilla profile

Step Five:
Run Minecraft with Vanilla Profile, Record FPS, RAM usage, etc.,

It needs to be in the same world if at all possible. This information might help us find the problem.

Close Minecraft and Anything else running java (Or just everything)

Uninstall Java

Install this version (JDK + JRE): http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/ ... 33151.html

My minecraft disagrees. Was using about 1030mb before texturepack. Now it's using 1908mb.

That would be the case if you don't have a dedicated GPU, but rather integrated graphics (which are part of your processor, and use regular RAM).

I do have a dedicated GPU. Minecraft is using about 1gb of VRAM, and about 1.5gb RAM (give or take a few hundred mb)

I recently made a post talking about the issues of Minecraft.

My Post:
post3405328.html#p3405328

RAM isn't ever utilized in Minecraft Clients, mostly only on servers.

Minecraft operates a lot on your CPU. Perhaps look into that issue before assuming your RAM is the issue.

David5886Just put it at 1GB. This is what mine is:

-Xmx1G -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC -XX:+CMSIncrementalMode -XX:-UseAdaptiveSizePolicy -Xmn128M

PS, DO NOT, EVER, unless you use mods, ALLOCATE MORE THAN 1GB OF RAM TO MINECRAFT, IT WILL DO NOTHING TO HELP IMPROVE PERFORMANCE IN GAME!

What About texturepacks? I'm using about 2gb right now running a texturepack on non modded minecraft.

Nope. Texture packs are GPU ram (vram)

Lol, no. Turning up your render distance causes your GPU's memory usage to go up, not the Java instance's.

8 chunk render distance:

16:

32:

The memory usage fluctuated between 400 and 800 MB in each scenario.

Shaders and texture packs also require more graphics memory, not system memory.
