How do I edit minecraft maps?

I was just curious on how I edit minecraft maps (not how I get a places location just by walking around), I mean like how do you put your own pixel images on it and stuff. For those of you who don't know what I mean, it has been used as a "readme" for many contests including caved in, the minecraft island project resort, and the sky limit project contest.
Do you need a special program? Do you need to be a modder?
Someone help me out plz!

Open minecraft, or MCedit // world edit.
Would be the best for that ^^
I'm not too sure if you can actually paste real pictures on it though.. never seen that before aha

what do you mean by the readme? do you mean written books? those are in the creative inventory.
Make clear what you mean if you expect a good answer. if you mean pixelart, make it in paint first and then use minecraft blocks with similar colors to reproduce it. if you mean builds in general, see the above posts. A server with Voxelsniper on it might be useful as well.

Its mostly MCEdit and Vanillia Minecraft..

You go on Minecraft and edit the world yourself... it's not even hard just fly/walk around edit anything then go do something else

Yes, you do need a special program. It's called Minecraft.

Try MCedit or the World edit mod (its in singleplayer commands i think)
