Minecraft doesn't respond when joining multiplayer server

When I open Minecraft and try to join a multiplayer server, it will usually load, show one scene(in the case of some servers I join it asks if I would like to download a texture pack automagically, and then not respond), and then start to say Minecraft isn't responding. In other cases, it will show the MOJANG screen and freeze there. This happens for both 1.8.9 and 1.12.2, the releases I have tested. (I haven't played Minecraft in quite some time and have left it sitting on my computer, if that has to do with this glitch, but I doubt it.)

Never mind- this problem is fixed. Had to install the old launcher for Minecraft here (https://minecraft.net/en-us/download/alternative) and now Minecraft works. :D

The thing is, Minecraft freezes even when I am joining a server without texture packs.

it sounds like your game is crashing from the packs this happened to me once it fixed it self and maybe your pc/laptop cant handle the pack
