Hello PMC!
My name is Colossal and I just started to make a minecraft role-play server. I have an old desktop that I can use for a dedicated server but I need some upgrades. Also I have 3 routers and one has a 50mbps download speed and a 8mbps upload speed. I have no idea what parts that I should upgrade on my computer, how much this is going to cost me, etc. If anyone could post what parts I should buy, If I need a new router, and how much this whole project will cost me. I plan to have 100 players on the server at one time.

My guess would be because the IP is listed in SORBS

You can attempt unlisting your IP here: http://www.sorbs.net/cgi-bin/support or contact your ISP about it.

My public IP is 98.198.233.196, and my private IP is 198.168.1.5 but im guessing that you only need the public one.

For some random reason, when I go onto linode it says that my ip is banned. I have never been on it and neither has my family. Is there any way to get on to it?

Your router can be as fast as you like, but your internet service provider won't be. 20 MB/s will be 160Mb/s. I don't know of any internet service provider that even sells 160Mb/s, and even if they did it would cost a lot more than getting hosting away from your home.

20MB/s would be, but 20Mb/s isn't even close.

A megabit is 1/8th of a megabyte, and residential lines are usually sold by megabits.

As said before, a virtual private server is a much more affordable and usable option. For instance:

http://www.linode.com/
https://www.digitalocean.com/

Or get a pre-set up configuration from a minecraft hosting provider:

http://www.multiplay.co.uk/
http://mcprohosting.com/

How much upload speed do I need? Is MBps 20 enough? Also, I can't seem to find how to buy a hosting machine.

I'm a bit baffled that you would spend $1000 on a hosting machine for something that will be completely bottlenecked by upload speed, since you are home-hosting. This isn't really something you can fix with new computer parts, if you want a larger server, you need it to not be hosted on a residential line.

There are three options:

1) Collocate a machine (extremely expensive and requires already having the machine)

2) Buy a virtual server

3) buy minecraft hosting

So... What do I need to upgrade it?
Or can I buy (Not rent) a cheap hosting machine for 1000$ Max.
I am fine with getting a new router too.

There are different specs to look into for what you're attempting to do.

RAM and CPU power are going to be two main factors, however upgrading a home computer to handle minecraft hosting is pointless considering that your primary bottleneck is going to be your upload speeds. For any server you plan on going higher than 20-30 players with, you're almost certainly going to need non-home hosting. Not to mention, server hosting is almost always against your ISP's ToS. While a minecraft server might not send off flags, the larger it is, the more likely it can

RAM is a type of computer memory that can be accessed randomly; that is, any byte of memory can be accessed without touching the preceding bytes. RAM is the most common type of memory found in computers and other devices.

So my server for instance has 2 gb RAM and has 30 player slots, in my opinion it depends on what your server uses such as, amount of player slots, and plugins you have.

How much RAM do you allow on your server?

Everythings depends on how many players you're supposed to have on the server.

^^^^ is also a VERY important question
