I have a 24 slot server, and don't have many people play on it, at all. I've been wanting to get a 1,000 slot server. It has 4 GB of RAM on it, and I think I will have 5 people on it constantly, at LEAST. If I advertise, I would have about 30-50? Is this enough RAM if I have about 10-12 plugins?

It isn't just the ram but also a high Ghz the processor is on that server. Example would be I had a 4Ghz processor with 8GB of ram and that server ran perfectly with it set to 20 slots. You have to consider that Minecraft is ram and processor intensive and you need both high numbers in ram Mhz and Ghz.

You also have to take into account your Internet upload/download speeds.
And besides that, why on Earth would you want to drop a ton of cash on a 1k slot server, when you think your maximum amount of players online at one time would be 50?

As Paril says the number of slots available will not affect performance unless they're filled.
Your server has 4GB of RAM which is imo fine for any medium sized server. I run my own with 10GB dedicated to my Minecraft process with a fairly large main world, small sized nether + the end - 32 plugins and at times when there's 30 - 40 players on it might only be using 5GB of memory.
If you run into any issues I recommend you try the Spigot modification of Craftbukkit as it can really help out for systems with limited resources. Will take a load off your memory and CPU

Alienware x51 has 8gb of ram and it can run a lot of slots, it may not only be the ram though that has a impact. Try getting a graphics card, unless it is a laptop. Slots that aren't used are just a number, it doesn't have any use, so if you can't run 25/356 then you need a upgrade.

How much ram you need depends on alot of things.. I've hosted 300 players at once on 2gb at a classic server, although it's much more skimmed down and chunks don't actually load server-side.
How many players you have on, where they're at, how fast they're moving all effects how much ram is used.. But yea, if you only have 12 or so plugins (Assuming they're all free of some sort of massive memory leak) you should be able to host 40+ players.

Thanks for the help guys, It's a pvp server, so people die, run out, die and so on. Is this bad?

I've always heard it takes a small amount to have those ready to join.
Thanks for correcting me though!

It's a common misconception. The max slot # is just a number; it will always take up 4 bytes to store the amount of slots, but as far as I'm aware there's no static array or anything which is pre-filled at this size. If there is, however, then you'll only take 4 * n bytes more of memory, which again isn't really that much.

An empty slot does not take space. Slots are not real until they are filled - the number of slots is just an upper maximum to which it stops accepting new players.
I always set my slots to something super high when I have private servers because it's funny. It has no impact on gameplay.

Just for an experiment, I let my 8GB take up 1 billion slots. If you have the ppl on, it wont work, but the slots itself will work

Interesting.
Are you saying that players can still play on the server even though the slots set at a billion? Could people even join at all when it was like that?

Well that would just be overkill.

Having an empty slot still takes RAM...

What if I do not have 1000 players on? I will never have all 1000 slots filled...

4gb cannot hold 1000 players.
My 16gb quad core server can only hold about 200-300 players.
