Spigot vs Bukkit

So I've been running a small, pure no plugins vanilla whitelisted server for the past month with about 20 active players each day (formerly around 30 but I'll get to that) and as time has progressed a few members have been extremely absent and a few have left the server just due to boredom which I hold no hard feelings about but I digress, basically I want to know which is the more up to date, better and easier to use in your opinions as server owners and admins between spigot and bukkit, this is due to the remaining player base having a desire for a few plugins here and there which I'm fine with adding so please do share your thoughts, thanks.

from my experience, bukkit and spigot are almost identical
spigot uses more resources but runs a little smoother
bukkit the opposite
some plugins need to be coded for spigot, essentials and some times PEX to give an example, 99% of the rest of the plugins work in both with out problems
