Have you ever played survival with an infection mod?
Hi gang!
Playing with mods can be pretty awesome & satisfying, but at the same time many of those mods can also make you kinda overpowered. A good example of this are Botania and Ars Nouveau: Botania's terrasteel armor and tools will give you some serious protection and combat & mining advantages, while an intermediate spellbook from Ars Nouveau allows you to do almost anything... who wants to place torches when you can also easily shoot magelight around? ;)
Because of all this you may quickly notice that some vanilla mechanics have become kinda easy. Fighting a wither in the open could be a bit of a challenge, but with these tools not so much. So my gf and me decided to spice up the game a bit and we added an infection mod, in specific: Spore - Fungal infection. Though I did carefully (re)configure the mod so that it only spawns its mess in only one specific biome, this way we still get our challenge but without it overrunning the whole world.
So far, so good and we're having a good time. My friend already explored some of the generated Spore structures and managed to fight some mobs and collect several 'creepy' items while the horde itself is in full strength in that one single biome (I settled for the mooshroom fields).
But yah, it got me wondering... have you ever played with an infection mod yet?

I played with Spore and Flesh several times (separately), each time there were no other mods. It was fun for some time, I liked Spore much more. On my longest playthrough I got to full diamond gear, cleaned a couple of spore-infected caves with lava, but eventually I got cornered. The Spore guys killed me near my home, and when I tried to collect my items - I was killed by "me" that spawned after previous death. So basicly I had to start all over again, and I didn't want it, so I gave up on that world.
Limiting Spore to the mushrum biome - seems like a good idea!

I knew of infection mods since years back, the first one I can remember only changed blocks to a corrupted block and that was all it did. Spreading slowly, but turning all blocks to a useless variant.
Nowadays there's many creeping world corruption mods, my favorite for a while was Parasites. I've heard of the spore one and a couple others, might have to try them out someday.

Interesting... I didn't expect people not to know about these. Well, in hindsight I should have added links, better late than never?
Fungel Infection:Spore is an infection mod which we really enjoy playing with. We enjoy the visuals and the mechanics, but also the lore... it basically turns the normally innocent substance of mycellium and turns that into something seriously deadly with legal consequences. Even something as harmless as breaking one of the new mycellium plants can release spores that will affect you and possibly infect mobs around you. It's a pretty awesome mod, but not perfect... if you add this to a game with all the defaults then you'll most likely going to get issues within an hour or so.
Another one that we like is Sculk Horde. It is just as deadly (maybe even more so because it can really quickly start destroying your world), but a huge advantage is that this mod doesn't start running right away. Instead it places a dark and forbidden temple at the heart of your world (literally: at 0, 0, 0) and only when a player in survival mode enters the main chamber (which is pretty deep down)... then the horde suddenly wakes up and all hell breaks loose.
By the time you manage to get back to the surface you'll immediately notice patches of sculk forming and spreading there as well.
Oh well, I guess I should write a blog post about these ;)

Had to look up the term (and am not sure the search returns correspond entirely to what you are describing).
Altering the mod to confine the effect to a specific biome[s] seems a good idea. [Enough so that I'm surprised this isn't the default arrangement.]
