Here's a video that explains how to install Forge on 1.16.5. The process is exactly the same for most other versions as well, so you can follow the same instructions. All that would be different is the version of Forge that you download.

so put ur mod files in ur .minecraft mods folder, now go to mc and click on "mods", and click on the mod and see if its turned on. now u can play

Unless you are getting really old mods for very old versions of minecraft, then all you need to do is download the .zip or .jar file from somewhere like CurseForge . Leave the file exactly as it is and just drop it in your 'mods' folder. The mods folder is created when you add 'Forge' to your minecraft.
In other words, do not unzip the contents of the files you download. Leave them intact.
