Way back when in the old 1.8 before Microsoft bought Minecraft, there used to be a mod that added more commands to the game, that allowed you to fill a specified area, sphere, circle, cube, square, rectangle, or cuboid, with any specified block - even air or water. Allowing you to cut out a whole bunch of earth really easily.

The mod I'm thinking of even allowed you to summon various weather effects, as well as directed lightning strikes.

Is there anything like this for the modern release? I really liked being able to slice out the land really easily.

The first thing that immediately comes to mind is WorldEdit. You can make selections, place cyllinders, spheres, cubes squares even duplicate a shape!

For weather, you can use the vanilla /weather rain 1000 you can also use the /summon command to summon lightning at a coordanite.
