Slower Weapons

In making a weapons mod, I really need to be able to balance the effectiveness of these weapons. Is there a way to slow down a weapon by it's weapon class (for instance mine is ItemWarhammer.class) and it's too overpowered to be swinging at normal sword speed. I've been stuck on this for a week now looking through code to no avail.

I'm pretty sure that it's totally possible to slow down weapons - I'd take a look at some of the weapon mods that are out there ... There's a technic pack called "CraftALot Civilizations," that has a couple of swords that are a bit slow to swing.
