For the most part, I know what I want to do and how to do it. I want to make a colorful game with lots of variety inspired by those classic Nintendo 64 platformers you played as a kid. Something inspired by great games like Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Donkey Kong 64, and Glover, but I'm not quite sure which direction to take it from there.

For starters, this adventure needs a good name. Something fun and playful, nothing too epic. This isn't a big quest of truth, it's a fun adventure in a land of wonder. The whole goal is to hearken back to those wonderful days of sitting around your game console and finding the next exciting level in your game as a kid.

Second, I want the hub world (a central free-roam level with doors to the other levels) to use the same formula as any Rareware game did. It has one general theme, but as you approach the levels, it becomes themed after the level. (For example, the ice levels' doors would be in a frozen cave or the fire level would be inside a big volcano, go watch a few episodes of a Banjo-Kazooie playthrough if you don't know what I mean.) I wanted to know if everyone prefers an island (meaning you explore an outdoor environment between levels) or a castle (meaning everything is indoors, but still themed).

Finally, and most importantly, I wanted to know what kinds of levels you all would like to see. would you prefer one big open level with required hidden items in it, or a couple smaller, linear levels, with optional hidden items? (Long story short, Banjo-Kazooie collectathon levels or every theme has 5 normal levels and something like a boss.)

As a side note, I'd really like some theme suggestions for the levels. Currently, my ideas include grassy plains (aka every first level ever), ice, desert, fire/lava, a factory-themed level, a beach, and a space- themed level.

Thanks for all the help, everyone!

I'd go for islands as it sounds pretty cool. Can't really think of a name unless you have a plot or specific goal that you need to complete which it could be named after. I think a frozen, ice age type theme would be cool. Like riding custom mobs, snowboarding and such. There's room to be creative there. Hm, other themes...Can't think of any right now :I might add more later. Good luck btw.

Thanks for all the great suggestions, guys! I've been planning some gameplay mechanics and I just learned about the new wings and I can assure you there's going to be at least one flying level as well.

Perhaps have a haunted mansion theme,

underwater theme (everybody's favorite)

As Yoda said, an underground theme

perhaps a level in the clouds, or sky? Maybe a flying airship

A level on... the moon...

A level, as Yoda said once again, in the jungle. maybe have the player in a city built into the jungle canopy, instead of the floor.

To elaborate on the factory design, have crush traps. Every good factory level has crush traps.

A temple level

A cliff level, (start on a beach and have to climb up a giant cliff.. Maybe could be used as a tutorial, to get to the hub. More >
Click to reveal
The player could spawn on the beach, with a wrecked boat. They would get to practice basic game play mechanics to get up the cliff, to the hub-world .

Perhaps have a level where you play on/inside a giant creature? That would be amazing.

Candy land! ( Or an amusement park)

Maybe have a small Easter egg level, themed as behind the scenes, something like that.

An arena?

A town? Like a little village.

Time trials! Quests! (No escort missions, please.)

If I can be of any help, building, ideas, server hosting, just pm me. ~Miner

1. Tales of something
2. I would go with island
3. Smaller with optional collectibles
Side: Try a jungle or underground theme.

for the second point, if you want the theme to be like the level, there are 2 options I can think of.
1 would be to change specific elements of the hub world around the player as they came near it (oak trees turning into snowy pines for winter tree, for instance) using /clone.
Another, easier but also more time-consuming method would be to make a separate hub for each level's theme, and teleport the player there if they step inside a certain radius of the level's entrance, then teleport them back to the main theme if they step outside that area.
