Laser Weapon on latest snapshot

I am working on making a laser weapon on the latest snapshot. The goal is to have an item, that upon right click, will fire a laser made of red stone particles that will do damage to mobs and players. I am a bit of a noob in terms of commands, so any help would be appreciated.

I have made exactly this (well not quite, it's endrod particles and it teleports anything it hits to a respawn point) and would be happy to teach you how to make one. Just send me a direct message and I'll get back to you with some code.

I just don’t know how to make the particles form a beam and also how to do damage to other mobs and players. I also don't know how to make right clicking shoot the laser.

I'm not so sure, but summoning particles might work. It sounds like an awesome idea though, go for it!
