if you want something like specific books to be checked out then I would suggest something like this: allow them to pick up the book somewhere, this can be done any way you want to give a player a book, and you can have only a certain amount of books if you wanted, then make a "return" hopper, when they place the book in it the item is lead through hoppers, sorted with the simple hopper sorting system for each book
(make sure the book would be able to go through the filter system when you are done, if it isn't working, it may be because the filter books are copies and that one is the original, so maybe only give the player the copy, not the original)
then have the sorted out books lead into the same dispensers or chests that you had the player take it from.
