Looking at references of skins definitely helps. I will say I don't use the PMC Skin Editor much, only if the skin I'm making has a transparent layer on it. I mostly use the Skindex Skin Editor since that's what I'm more familiar with. But I will say, skinning usually takes practice. I have done it for over a couple years and I have majorly improved looking back at my first skins (they were horrible, no detailed texture and just plain colors plus the hair was weird)

There's some advice for ya from a skinner. Hope this helps.

I found an app called Skinseed that has a good skin editor. It's helpful because I can work on skins in my downtime.

Well with palletes, you may want to try instead of making colors brighter or darker, change the color itself just a little bit.

Just try Google, and try to do what seems natural. Zoom out while making the skin and see if it looks right.
