Shading attempt
So I recently decided that one of my skins looked like crap due to the lack of shading, so I decided to try shading it. So here's how it turned out, what do you think?

It's not that bad, but it's not that good, either.
Focus on actual shading rather than "shade because I need it".
A face should be shaded like a face, hair should be shaded like hair, and so on.
Hands should be defined - go look at some peoples skins to see how to do that.
Colours - you should be hueshifting, and not going by the darkness/lightness scales.
There's plenty of tutorials on hueshifting and proper colour picking - I suggest you go take a look at them.
Blacks and whites - don't use them TOO often in skins. Black/white pixels are good in places like the eyes, mouth, etc. If you're going to make black pants/arms, etc, I suggest you use hueshifting logic and use dark blues/purples.
And remember, shade everything how it should be PROPERLY be shaded. Define shoulder blades, pecs, fat stomach's, cheeks, chins, nose, mouth.
There should be highlights defining the cheeks, the nose, and some other things.
Remember, don't overdo shading, and don't "underdo" shading. Just don't use noise.

Could use more shading and hue shifts

Hm , I see what you mean but technically it's two types of shading.

What is? Random noise? Random noise is just plain not shading. It may make a skin look slightly better than a just plain all-one-color skin, but it isn't shading.

Noise isn't shading.

Why shade by hand? go to http://minecraft.novaskin.me/ , use their skin creation.
At the top left there's a little square with a check box beside it , when you hover your mouse over it it should say:
"randomly changes the color itensity when drawing" it helps shading alot
see what skins i've made on nova, go here :

Erm, that is not shading, and you can do that feature in paint.net, MCSkin3D, etc. And its not allowed on PMC at all. Using noise is not shading, it doesn't even look good
You skin is actually fairly good, not too bad, but not good.

I think that second part was directed at me, so thanks!

yup, they was for you

What you did is what I used to do. Random noise is not the same as shading.

pretty bad overall
most of the shadows dont make any sense
the best way to learn where shadows belong is to look at it irl
go and look at you in a mirror

Thanks, but it's one of my first attempts at shading.

The top of the arms should have another color I think

I made the top of the arms lighter gray because SS officers had epaulettes.

Looks good to me,
