I've been told that the finalists for the skin contest are based on diamonds. Then the 100 finalists are judged.

So I go looking through the desert skin contest entries, I find one that has 6 diamonds. I check my skin entry, which has 11 diamonds but is not a finalist.

My question is: How can a skin with less diamonds be automatically chosen for the finalists over a skin with higher diamonds?

At the time of the contest entries no longer being accepted you had 3 diamonds. This may have been a direct factor in this situation for you. In any case the finalists are chosen by the site based on diamonds and I believe a few other things (been a while since it was explained to me) and I -think- judge diamonds are counted as multiples for the purposes of the algorithm.

I see 1 skin having 6 diamonds right now (I skimmed, I didn't look at every entry and stopped at this one) 5 of these were achieved prior to contest entry period ending, 1 of those 5 being from a judge.

Judge diamonds are worth 5. Chances are that's why his was above yours.
