You probably heard that 1.9 came out right? Well one cool feature was the ability to make transparent layers on your skin (with the hat option thingy). Anyways, i used paint.net to try and set a small hat layer of my skin transparent but when i try it doesn't work, so can someone help me with this?

As mentioned above you could use gimp or photoshop but if you don't want to install those programs you could download a plugin for the transparency effect for paint.net heres the url http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/32048-v

Paint.net does not support transparency. You will have to use an alternative image editor such as Gimp or, as mentioned above, photoshop.

Both are adequate for this sort of task, and I prefer photoshop, but just in case you don't have ~$800 lying around, Gimp is a sturdy, and completely free alternative.

Wrong. Transparency is supported, as long as you adjust this slider:

This is with the most recent update of Paint.NET, though it's been there for a while, so I'm not sure where you found that it didn't have it. I've used it before for texture packs, and it worked just fine.

That works when placing individual pixels. When using the brush tool, it doesn't come out right. When I'm using the brush tool and want partial transparency similar to that slider, I create a new layer for the color I want and adjust the layer opacity to effect all my brush strokes on that layer, just to add on to what you were saying.

Then you just merge the layer down onto your main image and the layer retains its ajusted opacity when merged onto on opaque layer.

I think it will be easier to use something like photoshop. But you need to select transparent on photoshop.
