I recommend MCskin3D, or some people also use GIMP

MCSkin3D is pretty nice, but, if you really want a challenge, use Paint.NET, Paint.JAVA, or GIMP.

Do not use Novaskin, or MinersNeedCoolShoes. Does anyone read the rules these days?

*cough* Minersneedcoolshoes/whatever other part picker you wish to mention - made skins are not allowed on PMC, just for the record. I prefer MCSkin3D personally, although Paint.NET or GIMP will do the trick about as well.

MCSkin3D if you are just making a skin casually
NovaSkin or MinersNeedCoolShoes if you're a kid with unoriginal garbage. Like how I was. Ish.
Paint.NET or GIMP if you're adventurous.

Really... You can create original "garbage" with Nova Skin. Check my skins that weren't before my Vinyl Scratch - Those were done 100% by me with Nova Skin. Just cause some people don't make original skins with Nova skin doesn't mean you can't.

But most consider Nova Skin "Impossible" or "Hard" to skin with and right when I began skinning on it, I was fine. Still new with the buttons, but in the end I learned.

MCskin3D however, is better with Nova Skin. I find MCskin3D very useful, whereas with Nova Skin I could never, never, get my blacks to white right without skipping a grey.

Personally I use GIMP - once you memorise the actual skin layout it's really easy. Of course it's just a general image program, not a full skinning program, but it works for me.
