I like using Paint.Net it's a lot more handy sometimes and perfect for adding effects all the time! It might be a little complicated at the first times but you'll get the hang of it! (if you want to see what I'm talking about you can check out my skins)

I use MCSkin3D The only thing I wish it had that would be very useful is hotkeys for switching to tools.

I texture the skin in 3D mode. o3o Does anyone else? Or do they just use the 2D view?

Eh, I use both, arms and legs 3D, body and and head 2D.

Also I suggest trying MCSkin3D it is a great program for skinning.

When I used the newest version it does have hotkeys, like 'e' for eraser, 'p' for pencil and 'f' for fill! maybe you just have to upgrade?

It still doesn't have hotkeys for undoing and redoing. :c

Doesn't the regular ctr+z and ctr+y work?

And I'd love to see a gradient tool, or a cutting tool where you get to select an area and move it.

I never really liked MCSkin3D much. The only benefit it has to GIMP or Paint.NET is that it has a previewer included. When I make skins, I usually use Paint.NET and Minecraft Skin Viewer. That's because it has more advanced tools, though MCSkin3D is still a great program, and fantastic for beginners.

I use Miners Need Cool Shoes. Easy, and I don't make skins very often anyway.

I personally use NovaSkin, it's just really easy to use.

Same with me. I recommend any new skin-creators to try it out.

It really depends on your style. As ETminecraft said, Paril's MCSkin3D is pretty good. I use skin editor, but it feels really limited. Some programs I would avoid:

Novaskin
Miners Need Cool Shoes
SkinCraft

Those feel more like generators to me, or they are just very limited.

I use it in conjunction with Paint.NET, but you could pair it with any image-editing software.
