I downloaded a schematic of the tower of Isengard, but the problem is, when I imported it into MCedit, even from the lowest possible level, the tower is 300 blocks tall. (MCedit only allows 128)

So my question is, how is possible that someone built this without being able to build that high, and how do i get it onto my map?

The problem is that Minecraft save format does not allow for anything larger than 128 blocks right now because of the size of the saving format. You can't physically save a map file that has more than 128 blocks tall. You need to wait till Notch adds some ability to increase the height of the map.

All I want is to be able to place blocks above the 128 block height restriction. I don't care if I can see the generated blocks on the ground or not. If you use Zombe's mod pack to fly, you'll see that it doesn't lag no matter how high up you fly.

The tower would only be 200 blocks above the limit anyways, so you could still see the generated blocks on the ground.

Like I said, everything is fine with chunks, lighting etc. I just want to be able to use MCedit to place blocks above the level height.

Because realistically, I think it would look cool to have this massive tower standing in the distance. It would be like an epic skybox.

But there is no fog and chunks are loaded completely which includes the full height of the map. Someone just needs to program a better algorithm for display that allows far to show like 1000 blocks in every direction.

You used to be able to go above the limit with MCedit, I just need to find an older version. Any links?

Except that Minecraft will not accept the massively tall tower. I also agree with needing a taller world and stretching everything to 512 would be awesome.

Only problem is that I can't find one for MCedit

If anyone can find an older version of MCedit, It will probably work, as infdev has selections of up to 512 block high maps. So MCedit was probably built to accommodate this feature.

If we can get an old version of MCedit, and load the beta level into it, then perhaps we will be able to finally import that damned tower?

If it's a 300 block tower, mods were definitely used. There used to be a height limit mod back in beta 1.2 but, haven't seen any updates for it lately. Use your google fu

No mods were used, and the tower is well above the limit even when placed at bedrock.

I believe that person created that Tower directly from layer one (First layer of Bedrock), and to the maximum height. People usually build those things to show off their creativity, it's not really great for putting into your own world unless your world is at layer one.
