Help with comand blocks

So i had an amazing map idea but it requires command blocks for it to work. Only problem I have absolutly no idea how to use command blocks beyond giving a player an item so i figured some one could tell me things and other people could learn from this as well. Thanks and I hope you guys can help me!!!!

Scoreboards are easy. I learned how to do scoreboards. Thanks god for youtube!

It is easy. You just write command in commandblock. Then you connect it to lever, button or pressure plate, redstone, rs torches, etc.. And this command works. Command for giving player items in single player is: /give @p <ID# of item or block> <amount>

Oh and i have to say, if you write it command on chat write username's name instead of @p.
