If you want XP as well as promotion to your server, I would recommend that you build stuff on the server and then submit those buildings. It's a quick and easy way to get some promotion as well as a greater XP gain for uploading something :p

You barely get xp for posting a forum thread, you do however get 4 xp per reply on a thread.
The main way to get xp on the site is through posting submissions
