Hi I got minecraft 1.1 and there was no sound at all. I turned, everything max, even restarted computer. I also made my minecraft running on 64-bit java, if that does anything.

Happened to me once.
I deleted my minecraft folder it still did it...but after a while the sound came back.
Not sure if waiting will work for you though because I'm on windows.

actually i seem to be having the same problem, but what do i care, i dont even listen to it anyways xD

Force update...

You might need to re-update your minecraft system files. Forcing update should do the trick, if not then I don't know.
