So, I have been trying in 1.7.9 to make a mushroom shelter by placing a mushroom on a dirt block and hitting it with bonemeal. This used to work, but doesn't seem to be now - has this changed? Anyone know?

If you want to plant it/grow it outside during the day it has to be on mycelium and it can take more then one bonemeal to grow just like any other crop. Hope this helps.

Mushrooms will now only grow large at the correct light level or while planted on mycelium.

You need a GIANT cave, or as ^ said, Mycelium!
