So I have officially hit the jam-making limit. (Update on Stuff)assignment
Three jams! I have made three! And I shan't be able to make a fourth. Woe is me... and such. But it also means that I can't create more work for myself, so that's nice. I'm pretty close to finishing High Fantasy Character Jam's trophies I fixed Every Day Reshade-ish Jam's description and I've finished making all the design stuff for Skin Base Jam and my three entries, to get the ball rolling.
Which is pretty good! Obviously finishing up the example for HFCJ is probably important. But like if that takes me a little longer, I don't think it's the end of the world.
Sorry aside, but god skindex ads are obnoxious. Like PMC is bad a lot of the time, I can see three ads right now, but that's just ridiculous. Skindex and stupid NameMC people who request things from me always use those two sites to host things, and it's the worst. I hate it. Don't understand why people like skindex so much, I mean the editor doesn't have ads on it, but the site is drowning in them. Pop-ups to, I mean honestly!
Have some integrity skindex.
I'm closing those sorts of requests for a while, so hopefully I won't have to deal with the annoying advertisement spam from those two sites for a while. I am going to open something different in the mean time, not right now because I still have requests to finish before I uh am truly free of that but it's something that's less like a free commission and more like a 'fill out this form, and give me a prompt for a skin. I probably won't make exactly what you pictured, but it'll be more fun for me!'
The form is already mostly made, but I want to add more options to a couple of sections. It's got basically everything I think I am reasonably capable of making, either because I've done it before, or because I've seen it done, and think I could figure it out.
You only get to pick one colour (or two if you play your cards right) which is one of the things that I find most difficult about doing requests, is people's weird colour combinations that I struggle to make work. And sure, I could just go 'screw it' and just do what they say, ignoring if it turns out bad, but uh my brain doesn't like that like really doesn't like that. It wants to be perfect, and create something beautiful and amazing all the time.
Which is really the reason for the break!
Also I think the form kinda forces people to give me the information I actually want/need them to give? So I might keep a different version of the form around for that time when I go back to the more whatever-you-want requests. Almost everyone forgets skin colour for instance, which like bruh. That's not something I wanna get wrong. Just nope.
Also sometimes people say things in a confusing way, and you know. That's a little awkward for me, since I don't like to go: what do you mean pedant? Speak proper English fool Since you know, that would probably traumatise me. Sure I know that's part of me neuro-divergent squishy hyper-sensitive overthink-y brain, and not everyone is that sensitive but uh I would just like to avoid the situation completely if at all possible.
So form.
Expect to see it pop up in maybe a wall-post, in the coming week (I think I'll keep it out of the workshop until a couple of people have crash tested it). And even if you don't want a skin in particular, you could still fill it out, it's basically a prompt for a skin, so just picking a combination of things that you think could be cool together might still spawn some fun results. Maybe you could try translating one of your own skins into options on the sheet, and see if what I make is even remotely like what you made.
Anyway, this has been a ramble, I'm going to go work on a story now. But I am feeling the poll mood, so here is my question:
Do you use skindex, and if so HOW CAN YOU STAND IT?

Take heart (or quake in fear) as may be appropriate, but you will be able to ensahre yourself in further time-sinks as your current jams conclude 😇
[Which I expect you'd known, but why let a pesky little fact stand in the way of a snark ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ]
WRT: Sk1nD3x et al
What skins I make (not any great number) are done mostly in GIMP & the local skinmaker works well enough for proofing, so I rarely visit the mentioned sites.
(I do have both ad-blockers and anti-malware set-ups taht are fairly aggressive, so I've not noticed ads)

I have like a month, following that probably forty days or so, since that slot is probably going to be purely dedicated to reshade jams since I like them. I'm sure my jam workload will be unfortunate levels of manageable. My other workload... well historically I have proven to be incapable of managing my want to start new projects...
I just have to say, talking to you is like making me learn new languages. Hardcore chat speak and Latin? Bruh.
Oh yeah, you mentioned that you use Gimp before. I to use Gimp, although not for skins... (well technically sometimes, but that's like for when I'm doing stuff in Blender and need to make my like glow/gloss maps and make eye textures and stuff), and when you say local skin maker do you mean like one you have downloaded onto your PC? Or like PMC.
And yeah, I can only assume that's the story with most people. I mean it is just ridiculous over there. I honestly can't believe it. Like that is PMC's biggest competitor for minecraft skins? Bruh. The site ain't as bad as like Nova skin, but it's kinda outdated graphics and design. And someone is clearly trying to make A Lot of money off it, since the ad revenue from the ridiculous array of ads certainly isn't going to the people making the skins. And it doesn't seem to be going to a webpage developer/developing team either.
People run events off there, rather then PMC, but they have to do it manually, and like... why not PMC?
Some of them (I know because I have actually run into people like this) don't actually know about features and stuff on PMC, and/or want to keep things as simple as possible because they are Afraid Of Features. But honestly.

"Hardcore chat speak and Latin" unthinkingly…
the first used to be called 1337 [ upside-down LEET (sort of) on the old 7-segemnt LED displays like 07734 was "HELLO"] (Hacker culture hold-over from before it became a way of beating online censors to post n@ughty words )
I had to look for the Latin (which et al. technically is, but which I've long considered a part of standard English)
Anyway, I jjust write as I speak (and 😈 take the hindmost).
By local skin maker, I meant local to here {PMC} although I have at least one downloaded [somewhere — which may indicate how useful it proved to be].
There's a whole lot of "Afraid Of Features"-itis loose in the world [separate diagnosis from technophobia?] which I'd love to be able to absolve my generation of (were so few of my contemporaries still dependent on kids [<50yo] to set the time on VCRs & microwaves).
[EDIT: Not to mention my continuing inability to type well…]
Education ought be the cure for this societal affliction, but [after consulting The Magic 🎱 ] "Reply hazy, try again"

Oh I remember something like that that people used to do using calculators, not exactly like that but figuring out to use numbers to sort of make words. Because I'm part of a generation that had calculators in primary school. I look back and am confused, I mean I suppose I use them for *big number* multiplication and division still today. But really.
Anyway not the point.
I also write as I speak, a lot, and very quickly.
And I thought that might be what you meant but I wasn't sure.
It's a terrible disease. One I was apparently born immune to. When programs have limitations I always hate it, because I tend to speed run finding them and PMC advanced is so far from the 'dunno what that button does, and I can't figure it out no matter how hard I try' that I get in programs like Gimp and Blender (mostly Blender honestly).
And I don't even think it's about education so much as, people not wanting to learn things? Or being afraid to not know how everything works 100% of the time? When a program has extra features you don't have to use them, nor do you have to understand them. People don't seem to get that.

For some reason, I get ZERO ads when I use PMC mobile signed in. They come up when I sign in on Windows, or when I use PMC on mobile signed out, but not signed in on mobile.
Is there just something I'm missing?
Is there just something I'm missing?

I have sorta noticed this, PMC mobile has a lot less ads, I think less space. But I dunno. Signed in there might just be even less screen space because there are more features available then otherwise there would be. I mean (almost) all the PMC ads are placed outside of the areas where stuff you are interacting with is, aka. the edges of the screen. So *shrug* might just be a weird coincidence.
Or a bug, who knows. I don't think a lot of people except those who use the sight loads, and want to be able to access it when not on their PC/laptop use the mobile version. So it probably doesn't matter too much.

I used to use skindex because it was the only place I could find with good skins, and (at the time) I thought the editor was really great for my experiments in making my own skins.
But now it just gives me this sickly sort of icky feeling when I visit the site! I absolutely hate the editor, the ads, and basically the whole entire interface of the whole entire site.
Also I keep hearing all these like sketchy rumors of skin contests and stuff going on at skindex but anytime I go on there to try and find them I just end up getting lost looking at some endless walls of skins forever.
I honestly don't know why people use it at all, there's lots of better editors now, skindex's one is super dated and even when I had a good laptop it always felt laggy for like no reason. (likely the 3 zillion ads hiding in the background but who knows really)

Yeah there are skin contests, but your better off finding a reupload of an entry on PMC if you want to find the base skin or the details because they'll provide a link.
I wouldn't go searching, unless it's through google.

Yeah it's definitely become shady, I dunno if it was in the first place, but uh it reminds me of youtube to mp4 downloaders

don't worry, after they all finish you'll be able to make more!

In three months. Well one finishes in a month, but I'm just doing a similar jam again probably, unless the number of reshade jams on PMC picks up massively. Then I have a backlog of other ideas. *sigh* They will just have to wait I suppose...

I hate skindex

can you make one my username says the style VoidTempo pls
