The Steeple of Pavorford RP | Session 1: Skinbrightness_4
remove_red_eyeIntro/Premiseremove_red_eye
In a riverside meadow, surrounded by forest and isolated from most civilization, is a village called Pavorford. No one of quiet Pavorford dare speak or weep, for fear they be heard. No one of frightened Pavorford dare look out in the night, for fear their eyes be met by crueler eyes.
No one of grim Pavorford dare find hope, for fear it will be lost again. It is when travelers happened upon the obscure town that its oddity became renowned. Stories spread of the town’s terrorized and mute residents, of spirits and beings from other worlds and realities haunting and residing in the village’s wilderness, and of the giant, hideous ogre roaming its woods. The ogre is the first terror of the people; too much noise or if the beast gets bored, and this abomination, having dubbed itself the “Boggleman,” will take villagers as food.
Tourists, travelers, and foreigners have begun flocking to the town for its seemingly supernatural nature, laughing in the face of the Boggleman’s danger, and finding and spreading more rumors as the crowd grows: stories of hills and graves singing in the foggy meadow; gossip of a man living in the local chapel for over a hundred years; sightings of bizarre beings and creatures roaming the meadow’s fields and the woods, their rules and purposes equally strange and arbitrary. One rumor remains ever-present: that something is pulling and yanking on the strings of every puppet in Pavorford. That something slinks and crawls deep beneath it all, hidden and ever bent on a goal yet unseen. All who whisper of such possibilities can never shake the feeling that they lie in the closing hands of a mad god, inexorable and ever-marching, spinning some unseen wheel to keep the cycles moving.
Nothing ever really stops moving.
Not even in death.
What happens when the dance is interrupted?
This is a branching storyline of TheMountaineer's PMC Kingdom role-plays and Scarlamagne_Lunar's Fantasy World role-play.
This connects to storylines I've built up in all the role-plays mentioned above.
This is the first session forum, being the first of three parts of this overarching campaign.
Beginnings
Before we start, there are a few things I need you as the role-players to do:
1. Please decide which path you enter Pavorford from: the Western path, or the Southern path? There are no other direct roads into Pavorford. You will see them both on the map below. If you'd like to enter through the woods, you may choose that.
2. Please begin with one of the following numbers and their connection:
1 - Annihilation
2 - Evocation
3 - Affliction
4 - Identity
5 - Duplicity*
6 - Accommodation
7 - Aberration
These numbers are the "rumors" that you'll be investigating in Pavorford. Each one must be investigated by at least one of you for the story to progress. 1, 2, 3, and 4 may be explored by any number of players, though the first one to investigate will be the "first come, first served" in terms of anything gained from it. 6 and 7 may be explored by any number of players without consequence, and everyone would gain something from investigating. *5 is an active disadvantage, and only one player may investigate it; I would suggest you guys discuss among yourselves who would be interested in choosing it. Anyone who chooses the same rumor at the same time will be investigating it together.
Tell me your choices for both decisions above in your first reply.
Rules and "Heads-Up"s:
Please have access to an online or physical D20 dice. If you need an online one, you can google "d20 dice roller" and it'll give you a roll. This is because, for certain actions or situations, I will ask you to roll a dice to determine how successful you are. Please be honest and fair, because not all "good rolls" will have good results, mostly because of the next rule. Please do not immediately jump to "and then I cut off his head" after rolling a 20; instead, tell me your intended action and your roll, and I will describe what happens and how it goes. I will try to be fair with this; back to the 20 example, I am not gonna make a character suddenly impervious to your attack even if you rolled a 20- there will be an impact.
There will be times that I will have you call a coin-flip, with me being the one to flip the coin. These will usually be after certain dice rolls, for if you call it correctly, the dice remains as it was rolled (eg. you roll an 18 and call heads, I flip heads, and the roll remains 18). But if you get the flip wrong, then the dice roll will count as the opposite of what you originally rolled (eg. roll 15, call tails, I flip heads, the roll becomes 5 or roll 2, call heads, I flip tails, the roll becomes 18). Please keep in mind, the switch goes both ways as shown with the example, meaning calling it wrong can be useful if you rolled pretty low. This is an actively unfair rule, and if it bothers you, please tell me.
Please ping everyone involved in reply-chain when you respond, and always ping me with every response. For example, if Voktorka and BlueBoyBuilds decide to role-play with one another, Voktorka would ping both BlueBoyBuilds and me at the end of every reply, even if one's the one being replied to. This is so that everyone can keep up with what's happening.
I am going to be the one describing all settings and side characters. Please be careful when assuming what a setting may feature or what a side character says, as these are the things that I am in control of. Simultaneously, I have no control over you or your character's thoughts and actions. There may be times where I will ask you privately about changing or stopping something, but this would only happen if something is being disruptive or is an unexpected wrench in the flow of the story and campaign.

what exactly is 5, duplicity? it doesnt seem as if anyone else has chosen it yet. may i?
((If you're really interested in joining, you could PM me and we could maybe try to work something out, but no promises I'm afraid.))
((I'm afraid I've sorta solidified the player-count. The folks listed above asked to join a couple months back and I implemented their characters into the story. Any more players would just be a lot to have to possibly change and account for. Sorry.))
look below :p (and above :D)
((I would like to investigate rumor #6: Accommodation, entering from the Western Path. Thank you! I’m so excited to start roleplaying again!))
*Pialuin is walking down a dirt path, coming across a convergence of roads. It leads into a clearing from the forests, a small village visible at the path’s end. Poorly-made tents and stalls dot the grass along the path, crowds hustling and bustling among themselves.*
*Wrists, hands, pockets, ears. Pialuin’s eyes darted back and fourth between people, taking note of every piece of jewelry he saw. Tourists, rich and ignorant to those less fortunate, easy to pocket a few things off of them. He’d begin to search for a target.*
*A thin, bald man in a wealthy cloak walks by, holding a stack of books and with a small pouch slung over his shoulder. He doesn’t notice Pialuin past his stack of books. There may be something valuable inside the bag. . .*
*He'd observe the way the bag would droop, did it clink with each step? The shuffling of books that he was holding muffled everything else. Pialuin would follow behind the man, drawing a pair of scissors from his cloak. He walked past, clutching the scissors close to his side and "accidentally" bump the man, attempting to slice open the side of the bag to see what was inside.*
((Please roll two times. First, roll for your success on cutting the bag, and then roll for how stealthily you are at it.))

I need everyone to have a say on this: does anyone object to Scarlamagne_Lunar being the one who gets to investigate Rumor 5 - Duplicity? Once it’s decided, no one else will get to investigate it. Is this fine with everyone? I am taking silence as a “no, we’re fine with Ruby investigating it.”

Sure
I’m chill with it 👍
it’s all good 😊
By the time this post is 7 days old, I will be calling it.
((No worries man! I’m glad you’re safe! About which direction on the map are you entering from the woods?))
west
*Xarx’lk finds himself in a deep pine forest. It smells of a distinct rot and decay amid the fall air. The sound of a river can be heard just ahead.*
*follows river*
*The forest ends at the river, the other side being a large meadow. There’s a village at the opposite riverbank, with a small bridge leading over the water. On the very outskirts of the village, sitting on the bank, are three old watermills. They seem to have broken and gone into disrepair.*

((I would like to investigate #2, and enter from the southern path))
*The path Jacob is traveling leads out of the forest and into an open meadow. Along the road, he can see tents and stalls littering the edges as it leads to a small village. The imposing form of a stone chapel looms over the town.*
*Jacobs eyes scan the scene before walking further towards the town*
*As Jacob walks towards the town, a man with an armful of candles looks around, panicked. He is standing next to a boiling pot of some sort of stew. The candle-man spots Jacob.*
"Excuse me, stranger!" he cries, not moving away from his pot. "Would you be so kind to spare me a favor? I need to make a delivery but can't leave milady's pot or she'll beat the snot outta me!"
"Excuse me, stranger!" he cries, not moving away from his pot. "Would you be so kind to spare me a favor? I need to make a delivery but can't leave milady's pot or she'll beat the snot outta me!"
((I kinda want to find out what would happen if he just said no and kept walking XD))
"Well sure, I'm guessing you're delivering the candles there?"
"Well sure, I'm guessing you're delivering the candles there?"
“Yes, yes I am, sir,” the man answers. “They’re going to that chapel, I think. I don’t got much to pay aside from some book my wife made me buy here, and I just want to leave this place as soon as possible..”
*The man points to the large chapel to the Northwest of the village.*

(I'll investigate #1 and entering from the Western Path)
*The wooded path Starlight is on converges with another path, both leading into a clear meadow. Many tents and stalls litter the land by the road, all eventually leading to a small village. As she walks, she gets an odd feeling- like she’s hearing a sound that has no source, but is still heard.*
*she approaches the village with slight caution*
*As Starlight passes the stalls and tents along the roads, a thin, bald man in a colorful cloak stumbles past, struggling to hold up a tall stack of pigskin books.*
*she approaches the man and decides to help him carry his books* "Need some help?"
“Thank you, miss,” the bald man laughs, the stack steadying as he offers Starlight half of them. “I feared I would drop these precious tomes! You could take one, if you like, once we drop them off at the stall.”

((I'd like to investigate rumor #4: Identity, and I'll enter from the Southern Path. This is going to be interesting! :3))
*Picklefluff finds the road they’re on leads out of the woods and into a vast, open meadow. They can see a small village at the end of the road, with cheap tents and stalls being set up along the way, possibly by travelers and visitors.*
*Picklefluff stepped cautiously into the meadow, eyes scanning the bustling stalls and colorful tents. They moved closer to the nearest tent, keeping low and listening intently for snippets of conversation, hoping to catch a clue about the identities rumored to be intertwined with the village.*
“Hello there, little one!” greets a cheery voice from behind Picklefluff.
((I know it's a bit late, but could I change Picklefluffs name to Nimorin so it fits the story more? I'm sorry, I just didn't really think about how ridiculous the name was previously :p)) Nimorin/Picklefluff turned confidently, a sly smile creeping onto their face. “I’m not little, but I appreciate the sentiment. What brings you to this strange corner of the world?”
((Of course!))
*The one who spoke to Nimorin was a thin, bald man, bent over a lectern. A quill in hand, he pauses his writings in a pigskin book.*
”My apologies, friend,” he smiles. “but I should ask the same as you. I am just here to copy and transcribe old books, like this one here. What about you? Are you one of the Fair Folk that seem to haunt these people’s minds?”

(( Scarlamagne_Lunar and Sophisticated_Trashcan are converging on Rumor 3 - Affliction. We will be continuing from this reply for as long as you two are investigating this rumor or sticking together. Please be aware, that this is a bit of an experimental format for the role-play, and that it may be, at times, slow for people to reply or difficult to keep it organized or well-paced. Let's hope it goes well, but we're all going to be figuring this out together :) How this is going to work is that, in every reply you make, you will ping both me and the other role-player, just so everyone can keep track of what's going on.))

can people still join this one? it seems really interesting
((You can try signing up here if you’re really interested, but I can’t promise anything, as we’re already little ways in and a good number of things are well established. One person left and there’s now a free spot, so I’ll allow it. It’d be a bit of work and time to properly work your character and backstory into what’s going on, but I think I could pull it off. Just be sure to read over everything, as it is quite important info.))
yeah, reading that, im good! but you guys have fun

Alright, it is decided: Scarlamagne_Lunar will be the one to investigate Rumor 5 - Duplicity.
Would you like to start a new reply chain for this or pick up where we left off on the old one?
