I'm willing to help and partner with setting up a server!
I have a ton of knowledge and experience in the field of setting up servers, and I wanted to offer my help to anyone who has the equipment, money, or whatnot, but not the knowhow. I can help with any aspect of it from promotion and building to moderating and customizing. Even if you have a small server, I'm willing to help. All I ask is that you allow me to be a part of the server with you. I would love to help anyone to needs it. Let me know!

ok i have my own server but i have no idea what the ip is how do i figure that out so my friends and others can get on

Well to find your ip just go to http://www.whatismyip.com. The thing is though, you need to port forward so your friends can connect to that IP. Look at the other posts on this thread for tips on that.

what is bukkit

It's a server mod that lets you use things called "plugins" that are like an extension to it. There are many plugins, and they make a server much more interesting.

Sure there is, just host it on your own computer. Look up tutorials on setting up servers, it's not that hard. All you need is the Minecraft Server software, Hamachi or Port Forwarding, and some players! If you need help with any specific aspect of setting it up let me know and I'll help you get unstuck.

And I suggest getting bukkit, it's pretty awesome.

(newb question, it's my first server) what's port forward? how do i do it?
1
Well, I've never actually done it (I use Hamachi, it's easier). If you want to use Hamachi, simply go here: https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/download.aspx download unmanaged, create a network, and get your friends to join it. Use the ip it gives you at the top of the window for your server.
If you want to port-forward, (you need to know your router's user and pass) look up a tutorial, I'm not entirely sure.

First of all, have you port forwarded? That is the most important step. It's a fairly simple process that you can do in your router's configuration. Here's a great site: http://portforward.com. Tutorials for each router.
If you can't change the router settings or if you just don't want to, use Logmein Hamachi. It works like port forwarding, but all other players need to have the program as well as a network name and password. This can get complicated, but if you go to the Hamachi Servers portion of the Planet Minecraft forums, you can see examples of how people market their Hamachi networked servers.
Now if you already HAVE port forwarded, make sure you're using the right port. You need to be using the exact digits of the port you forwarded for this to work. People will type the IP like this: [your IP address]:[The port you forwarded]. If you are doing all this correctly, then you should try using a different port. If you have tried all these things, then please post again and I will search for more solutions to your problem.
