The modern date of christmas is simply a carry-over from the roman-catholic church of the holy roman empire attempting to convert the pagan tribes of Europe by having holidays on the same dates, or similar dates as, their pagan festivals, and christmas simply coincides with the ancient festival welcoming the coming of winter.
