To everyone who voted for Scrapyard Creations: you are all my pride and joy and the reason this community is a flourishing light in the darkness that is this world of mining and crafting. Tears have been streaming down my face. Our voice has not been and will not ever be silenced. What once was a minority has grown into a full-blown revolution; one I am profoundly proud of.

For it's not about the merits of an individual man's choice. No it is not! One man alone cannot do great things, this I am sure of. But us? We as the collective unit? We were born; we were built; we were DESIGNED to do these great things with one another. Created to be banded together as one. We stood up in the faces of power, tyranny, and oppression and we were all the better for it. We've demonstrated that no matter who you are, no matter where you came from, no matter where you are now, your voice is heard. Unless you voted for a different theme, then your voice is definitely not heard; this message is not directed at you.

Life is not about dancing off, or disguises, or villagers, or fashion, or the Aztecs. Life is about various heaps of contained scrap metal you may happen to find at a scrapyard. Life is about junk. Let us toast to this momentous victory. Thank you for coming, thank you for voting, and most importantly thank you trash; for without it, we would be nothing.

For the sake of PMC's skin contests - vote SCRAPYARD
(and not just because it's been too long!)

One last post before the poll closes, and hopefully an illuminating one!

I've seen some posts expressing doubt about the Scrapyard theme - "it's too narrow", "I can't think of any ideas", so forth.

Y'know, that's fine, but I hope you can be persuaded for PMC's sake:

The beauty of the Scrapyard Creations theme is that the 'scrap' is universal across numerous genres and mediums. Why? Scrap is a byproduct of humanity and our technology - its so damn prevalent that we have trouble getting rid of it IRL.

That's why it persists across the sci-fi, apocalypse, cyberpunk, fantasy, etc genres. We're tied to it, we're innately familiar with it.

It is death, it is rebirth.
It is the forgotten, and the discovered
    It is decay and renewal.
It is undoubtedly the widest possible theme this June.

Here's some scrappy fiction to inspire you (and were also used in the above image):

    • Real Steel
    • Elysium
    • Chappie
    • Wall-E
    • Mad Max
    • Fist of the North Star
    • Cyberpunk 2077
    • Borderlands
    • StarCraft
    • Escape from New York
    • Alita Battle Angel
    • Judge Dredd
    • The Fallout Series
    • The Matrix Series

As I hope you'll appreciate, these are all very distinct and unique pieces of fiction - but they all explore some version of the scrap aesthetic. This June, so can you!

Share your favourite scrap fiction too, let everyone know!

I want to distinguish between two ideas that drove the Scrapyard campaign:

    • Sentimentally: Liking Scrapyard
    • Practically: Guaranteeing a creative theme over a historical theme

I'm under the impression that you've mixed the two. I understand that you've no fondness for Scrapyard, but the campaign was also intended to illustrate the need for Scrapyard.

To your point - yes, you didn't say the contests weren't decreasing in quality. You said that not having Scrapyard wouldn't ruin the contests.

On the contrary, I believe that the contests are heading toward ruin because of the rapid decline in quality.
    • A decline in skin quality deprives the contests of their competition
    • The absence of competition will eventually ruin the contests irreversibly - what is a competition without competition?
    • Hence the decline in quality = the death of the contests.

Now the 'decline' has been going on for a while as the community shrinks, but it's suddenly accelerated under the historical themes. The historical themes do little to support skinner retention, and I believe that's because of disinterest in the historical themes.

    ____

    Problem #1: Disinterest
When a theme doesn't creatively interest the skinners, they won't enter. That's perfectly normal - that's you right now, and that's me on many an occasion in the past. We'll just wait til the next one.

Now with other themes, the disinterested are the minority. But with the historical themes, disinterest amongst skinners is demonstrably more frequent. So when our best skinners aren't skinning, there's no competition in the contest. It's not very fulfilling to have an uncompetitive competition.

So we need to vote in a creative theme.

Solution #1: Vote in Interesting, Creative Themes
But as the May poll shows, this is far easier said than done.

    Problem #2: Split-Vote
Thank you for pointing out that there were more than four options in the May poll. I narrowed it down not to suggest that there were only two creative themes, but to illustrate how two-runner ups (both creative) utterly dwarfed the historical vote.

Let's add on another creative theme - disguises - now the creative:historical ratio becomes 90:47. Which again, proves how the creative vote dwarfs the historical vote.

See, that's presents us with another problem. Despite overwhelmingly supporting creative themes, PMC ended up with a historical theme because the creative vote got split up. We can't hope to win with a creative theme if we are not unified.

That's why I pushed for one theme to unify the creative vote - Scrapyard.

    Solution #2: Unify the Vote
Now this is how sentimentality and practicality were brought together. I don't mind any of the creative themes, but I decided on Scrapyard because I saw the existing sentiment behind it. It was necessary to build on that vote to meet our practical ends.

The campaign wasn't to convince Scrapyard voters to keep voting Scrapyard, it was to convince the Villager voters to unite their vote with Scrapyard. Secondarily, it was to convince the historical voters of the practical merits of the creative themes - i.e. they appeal to a wider range of skinners and hence foster greater competition.

    ___

In closing, no, Scrapyard is not a perfect theme. It does not appeal to everyone, no theme does. That's hardly your fault, that's just preference. Usually we vote according to preference.

This time however, we vote to save the PMC contests.
Only time will tell whether we made a difference.

Please don't blame yourself for preferences beyond your control. Thanks for speaking your mind on the matter : )

The one thing I don't understand is why it's that theme in particular. The four you mentioned aren't the only ones they offer. I'd like to personally see something like disguises which isn't historical and has creative potential. With scrapyard, however, I don't really see that potential as strongly. Perhaps that's just my unending stupidity hard at work.

I didn't say that the quality of contests weren't decreasing in general. I said that not doing scrapyard isn't going to ruin all contests for the rest of eternity. I don't want to do a historical theme any more than you do but I just can't wrap my head around the concept of scrapyard.

I hope that you're at least happy with getting to do it this month. Due to my obviously stupid inability to come up with any ideas, I'll most likely be skipping again.

Hope you have a nice day/night.
