As a content creator myself, I understand this trend. The problem with the advertising model is simply very low CPM, which requires a huge amount of traffic to earn a little bit. Not everybody can be super popular to get that kind of traffic.
With a paywall you can probably earn a lot more with less traffic. But also I understand the other side, the consumers. People are just not happy with paywalls in general I belive.
I personally still prefer the ad revenue model or simpley said "adwall" and I'll stick to it for a while, even tough it comes with it's own problems. As much as people dislike ads, you still get the content for free in the end. Saves you money. Not everybody is rich enough to afford all these subscriptions lurking around currently :)
