I would board up my house with plywood and make it so there is only one entrance and exit. I would make a direct link to our roof where we would live. My family has no guns so we would improvise with baseball bats. We would, at the beginning when everyone is still getting infected, head to Wal-Mart and pick up all the canned foods and dehydrated foods we could carry. Then we wouldlink up with y friend's family, who have guns, and start indoor gardens to help us survive + the canned food. We would collect rainwater and drink soda cans to replenish when absolutely needed. I am working on a bug-in kit that contains first aid, drink, food, and some tools. In my garage is jsut about every tool needed ever, so that would be great. All in all, zombie survival would be kinda easy once you have weapons, food, and drink. The gangs that would begin to pop up are more what we would fear long-term.
