The Pearl dilution is a mutation in the cream gene, resulting on the recessive trait, which means, only whe two alleles for the dilution are present is when it'll affect the coat color. The gene also interacts with the cream dilution, enhancing the effects.
The dilution resembles a bit the cream dilution, lightening the pigments, however it does so by changing the red pelt to an apricot shade and the black to a chocolate brown. The gene also produces lighter skin and eyes.
When two pearl alleles interact with the base bay coat color the usual black points become a shade of chocolate or dark brown, while the red on the body turns to apricot, resulting on the bay pearl horse.
