The Hector's Dolphin as a beautiful marine mammal endemic to NZ.
There are two subspecies recognized; South Island Hector's Dolphin which is found around the South Island of New Zealand and the smaller and more endangered Maui's Dolphin which is found off the west coast of the North Island.

The Hector's Dolphin are the only dolphin species in NZ with a well-rounded, black dorsal fin, their bodies are a distinctive grey with black and white markings and a short snout.

The Hector's Dolphin is known my many Maori names including Tutumairekurai, Aihe, Papakanua, Upokohue, Tukuperu, Tūpoupou, Pahu, Pōpoto and Hopuhopu.

Unfortunately the Hector's Dolphin is an endangered species with an estimated population of 10, 000 dolphins left.
The Maui's Dolphin subspecies is critically endangered with only has 55 individuals!

Because these dolphins occur close to shore they are at risk of being injured by boats by either getting hit/run over or cut up by the propeller blades. Newborn calves are particularly at risk as they are relatively slow at need to stay near the surface more often.

Fishing also poses a risk towards them as they can get caught in gill and trawl nets and get fishing line tangled on them. This has the potential of seriously injuring them and often causes the poor things to drown.

The Hector's Dolphin is a stunning animal with endless grace and beauty and is definitely a species worth saving.
