The grey gene can turn a horse nearly to fully white, as well as fleabitten, which happens as the coat reagain a bit of pigments back on some tiny spots through the body.
Some times some areas keep some pigmentation for a while longer, and each step of the process has a name. A horse with red pigments in the mane may be called mulberry grey.
The horse can be born with any of the 3 base coat colors and it's dilutions togheter with the grey gene, they will be born colored or even a bit dark and start lightening the pelt as they grow.
