The Mushroom dilution is one of the most recently maped modifying gene, it was identified in 2014 and it so far has only been found in Shetland ponies.
The gene affects only the red pigmants, turning what would be red fur in a light sepia to a dark sepia brown tone, taking away a bit of the bright red coloration.
The mushroom modification apears on the bay color emphatizing a counter shading on their head and back, being able to be confused with seal brown or smoky black in some cases.
