The Mushroom dilution is one of the most recently maped modifying gene, it was identified in 2014 and it so far has only been found in Shetland ponies.
The gene affects only the red pigmants, turning what would be red fur in a light sepia to a dark sepia brown tone, taking away a bit of the bright red coloration.
The gene shows the most in chestnut horses, they are usually flaxen, varying from a light sepia to a chocolate grey, making them sometimes being confused with a silver black horse.
