You can use PMC's own skin editor to create mob skins - PMCskin3D, developed by Paril.

You can also download an earlier (now out of date) version of MCSkin3D - also developed by Paril and a precursor PMC's editor. I used this to create my mob skins because I find the interface easier to use than the web-app, but it doesn't have all the latest mobs on it. Have fun, and good luck!

Very similar, yes. Though I've read that Ammonites were more closely related to octopuses than they are to Nautiluses.
