The Long-tailed bat is one of two endemic bat species to NZ (the other being the short-tailed bat). Bat's are the only native land mammal species occurring in New Zealand.
The diet of these tiny, fuzzy things consists of fruit, nectar and small invertebrates such as moths and other nocturnal bugs.
The Long-tailed Bats are considered a critically endangered species and their decline has been linked to predation by introduced predators such as cats, possums, stoats and rats, habitat loss and degradation through land development.
