The dappled grey is actually a color phase in
the depigmentation of the horse coat cause by the grey gene. So it's
usually not a permanent color, the horse will most like lighten to white
or nealy white as it ages.
The
horse can be born with any of the 3 base coat colors and it's dilutions
togheter with the grey gene, they will be born colored or even a bit
dark and start lightening the pelt as they grow. Oftenly when either a chestnut or bay horse starts greying, they can be called rose grey, due to the pink-ish grey color produced.
