Is vanilla Minecraft combat too boring for you? Fear not, Dynamic Sword Skills will have you parrying, dodging, and attempting to perform strategic devastating attacks on your enemies!

Many of you may recognize these skills from my other mod, Zelda Sword Skills; this mod is a standalone version providing ONLY the combat skills, for those who don't want tons of Zelda-related items, mobs, dungeons and other things clogging up their games but still want to spice up combat.

Hotfix for issue #34 : 05/02/2020 7:02:00 pmMay 2nd

Fixed crash in all versions from 1.7.10 through 1.12.2.

Please note that the 1.7.10 and 1.8.9 filenames are the same "final" version, though the file contents have indeed been updated - I know it's not ideal, but I wasn't planning to update them ever again but wanted to include the hotfix anyway.

Hello I would like to add this mod into my map on curse forge. Your mod is currently exactly what I needed atm :D I would like to know though - Is it possible to clear my sword skill inventory (P) using commands (or any other way but commands just are da best)? I would really like to know this so I can make certain skills specific for different classes. Thnx in advance <3

I was wondering, in the configs the mod mentions specified mobs for skill orbs to drop from, yet I cannot find what mobs drop the specified skill orbs. I know they generally follow ZSS's specified mobs but back slice and super spin attack are not obtainable like the other orbs in ZSS, so I don't know where I can farm them. Could they be listed here and in the sword skills menu in game?

It's meant to be exploratory, but if you really want to know, here.

On the other hand, if you dislike having certain skill orbs only drop from specific mobs, you can set the following setting to 100 so that any mob that would have dropped a specific orb will instead always drop a random one: "Chance (as a percent) for mobs with a specific skill orb drop to drop a random one instead [0-100]"

Additionally, you may set the following to 100 to give ALL mobs a chance to drop an orb: "Chance (as a percent) for generic mobs to drop a random skill orb [0-100]"

Note that even at 100, the actual chance for an orb to drop is based on the individual skill orb drop settings (anywhere from 0.0% to 100.0%).

Absolutely incredible work, but I do have a question. The CurseForge version of both DSS and SwordAPI are severely outdated and misrepresent how good the mod is at the moment. I only managed to stumble upon planetminecraft because I was troubleshooting the CurseForge version. Why isn't the newest version on CurseForge?

Also you should probably state that the latest SwordAPI is required, as the version that's currently on CurseForge breaks Rising Slash ( The player is launched, but not the mob).

Thanks! The latest SwordAPI is highly recommended, but not technically required as of yet.

As for CurseForge, because I do not have Twitch or Twitter or whatever it was they now require, I no longer have access to that site - PlanetMinecraft is the only site where my mods will be kept up-to-date.

A few things and thoughts.

First of all, I fully understand frustration with Twitch, but all you need is an account. Not being on the Twitch client makes the number of people who can play this great version only a fraction of what it could be.

Secondly, on the mod itself, some suggestions and wishes:

  • Context-sensitive dodge button: check which strafe key the player has pressed in and execute a dodge in that direction, otherwise do nothing. Currently my workaround for this is enabling additional keybinds and binding both the left and right dodge.
  • Spam Click protection at -1 could read the attack speed value of the held weapon. Not necessarily too useful for swords/faster weapons, but helpful to fully disable premature attacks from axes and other, even slower weapons.
  • Increase minimal range on Basic Technique to 9/10 blocks, maximum range stays the same. At the lowest level Basic Technique detaches WAY too often during standard dungeoneering.
  • Armor Break is a bit too much, even at level 1, as it makes armoured mobs a breeze. Slower chargeup or more exhaustion would be good, maybe 30 tick chargeup at lvl1 going down to 20 ticks at lvl1
  • Both Parry and Sword Break have similar functionality (both deal ONLY with oponents who have weapons), except SwordBreak breaks the weapon(= no drop 4 u) and Parry drops it on the ground(the superior version). Imo it would be better to move the weapon-dropping functionality of the parry to Sword Break(or simply leave Sword Break as it is) and then have Parry apply a very short(1-3 seconds depending on the level) but high level Weakness to prevent the next attack or two. Consequently Leaping Blow could be changed to a minor Slowness.
All in all though, fantastic mod and quite literally the only option to enable interesting melee in MC.

Thanks for the suggestions!
  • Dodge already only works in the direction you press; it's been a super long time since I've actually played MC, is there a separate strafing mechanism now?
  • Spam click protection was designed for servers back in the pre-1.9.4 days; it was never intended to assist players in correctly timing their attacks.
  • With Basic Technique no longer required to activate most skills, this shouldn't be as big of an issue, but I'll take a look at it.
  • Good point - I'll either do what you suggest or see if I can find some way to have Armor Break progress from ignoring e.g. 50% of the target's armor at level 1 up to 90-100% at max
  • Sword Break is intended almost exclusively for PvP, specifically against another player that may also have a high Parry skill and thus be impossible or extremely difficult to make drop their weapon, depending on settings.
  • Parry is the generally more useful of the two. Perhaps Disarm could be made into a separate (passive) skill that applies when either Parry or Sword Break are successful, but I think parrying an attack is already strong enough without also applying weakness.
  • Leaping Blow applying slow instead of weakness is a good idea, I like it.

There is no separate strafing mechanism, but to avoid double tapping(not very accurate for timing dodges) right now you need to essentially bind the optional left/right gamepad(as stated in the config) mappings. If you aren't pressing A/D then both of them fire off fine. But you can't strafe left+use the right dodge or strafe right/use the left dodge. I don't think it's a big problem(none of these things are), but it's mildly inconvenient at first.

Basic Technique is still very useful, plus you get the cool slashing sounds, which adds a lot to the experience.

Armor Break ignoring a certain amount of armour would certainly be optimal, but I don't know if there is an easy way of implementing it.

I changed Dodge in the last update to disallow dodging in the opposite direction from strafing because it felt super weird to me, especially since the two opposite motions essentially cancel each other out and you end up standing still for a brief time.

It was easy enough for me to stop strafing and tap the other direction, but then I typically use WASD to activate skills. I can see how it might take some getting used to when using an explicit key bind - the trick is to stop strafing first if you need to dodge in the opposite direction.

For Armor Break, Minecraft damage sources either ignore armor or they don't, but I could modify the damage amount based on ignored armor percentages first. Should be doable.

Btw, for those wondering about 1.14+, I want to extract most of the skill code to the dedicated API mod and push out final versions for 1.9.4-1.12.2 using that, which will also help pave the way forward for ZSS, and then I'll update that API and DSS to 1.14+. It's going to be a while yet, sorry!

Heya, I was wondering if you'd ever add a feature to scrap/remove the current skill on a sword you find, and get that orb for yourself? I noticed the random drops can be really rare at times, and a reliable way of getting them would be nice. Maybe if you combine swords of the same skill to level 5, you could scrap them into an orb?



Of course, these are only ideas, and nothing too special.

I actually went the other direction - you can infuse orbs into the skill swords to increase their level.

I also plan on increasing the loot weight and drop rate ceilings so you can set it as high as you'd like.

I don't mean to be rushing you on the upkeep of this mod at all, I just really miss playing with it, yet don't want to sacrifice being able to play 1.14 due to numerous other mods.

So just out of sheer curiosity and anticipation, how far would you say you are with bringing this gem up to date and ready for use?

Still making progress - I think I'm finally just about finished with 1.8.9 and 1.9.4 versions, which were sort of the proof of concepts for all the changes.

Countless bug fixes and other improvements are on the way!

Well, there were a lot more bugs than I anticipated, but I've made tons of progress squashing them over the last 2 months.

I'll be skipping 1.13 as for some reason I couldn't get the workspace to set up and it seems like nobody plays that version anyway... right?

I've already started working on 1.14, but I've recently discovered a few bugs that I feel need addressing, so I will be doing that for all versions of the mod as well as back-porting the recent improvements from 1.12 to the earlier versions.

The API for this mod isn't working. I downloaded the same version as the mod (6.01 or something like that) but when I move it into my minecraft mods folder, and then log into minecraft, it doesn't say that I have it installed.
I rechecked and saw that it's icon was paper and not the picture of Java files, so I think it's something wrong with the way I'm downloading it

There should be a pdf user manual included in the download - use a program like 7-Zip to open the .jar file and extract the manual.

The syntax to reset skills should be /removeskill all

I do like this mod a lot, and according to the description of the modding API, it is possible to have limitless potential by adding DSS into non-vanilla swords and/or melee weapons, right? I'm using the 1.8 version of the mod here, however, as someone with zero modding experience, I do not know what to do with the modding API, in order to add the DSS effect into weapons from other mods. I would appreciate if you were to show me how to achieve that.

The modding API is for the developers of other mods to use if they want to have skills added on to their weapons; currently there is not any way for you as a regular user of DSS to add skills to weapons from other mods.

You can, however, add items from other mods to the Weapon Registry - this will allow you to use those items to activate skills that your character has learned from skill orbs.

dont know if it's a mod conflict but even when i set the drop rate to 100 no orbs drop from enemies. do i need to use default weapons to have the drop or is this a bug
