Lands of Icaria is a Minecraft mod with a focus on ancient Greek mythology.

It is developed and published by Axanthic Game Studios, the follow up team to the classic Minecraft modding team known as Team Melanistic (2011 to 2015).

Lands of Icaria introduces a brand new layered dimension with a wide variety of flora and fauna to explore, as well as plenty of new mechanics.
Discover all the secrets of this unique dimension, learn to brew magic spells, and loot abandoned villages packed with dangers!

Icaria is home to the revenants,
the remaining souls of an ancient civilisation that once roamed there
and even explored outside of it, even making it as far as the Nether.

This project is still very much work in progress and we hope to expand our team and bring in new modders to help turn this ambitious vision into reality.

Please note that a small number of items only have very limited use as of now, and you might still experience some bugs!

A short summary of the features in this mod:

• A new realm to survive in, explore, and conquer.
• 30+ new mobs to fight, admire, or farm, all using unique new high quality minecraft style 3D models.
• Two new bosses to fight: the Revenant Captain and the Arachne!

• A number of additional mini-bosses to defeat: the Vinegaroon, the Scorpion, and the Solifugae.
• Villages with new unique road systems, loot, and monsters!

• A unique concoction brewing system! Sequences of herbs brew
different concoctions with different effects. Find the scrolls for those
recipes in village loot!
• 4 new crops for your farming needs, and fertilizer to speed up the growth of plants.
• Over 400 new blocks to build with!
• 170+ new items, including various sets of tools and armor as well as many new foods, gems, ingots, nuggets, and mob drops.

• 7 new tree types with unique shapes, all with a full set of
saplings, stairs, slabs, doors, hatches, ladders, workbenches, fences,
and more!
• New special gameplay mechanics as well as nice visual
features like glow-in-the-dark mobs, special gems and mobs with light
effects and more!
• A depth based mining progression system; the
deeper you go, the harder the stone types you encounter. Each new stone
type requires a new higher tier of tools to mine.
• Most mobs have a low chance to drop their skulls for your private hunter collection!

We recommend to use Apple Skin and Just Enough Items together with this mod, to check how much hunger food items fill up and to see crafting recipes respectively!

How to enter Icaria:

To enter Icaria, one must first make their way into the nether. There, the player needs to find a Revenant Pyromancer to obtain it's drop: a Greek Fire Grenade!

Next, the player must obtain roughly enough Quartz items to craft a total of 6 Quartz Pillars, 2 Quartz Pillar Heads, and 6 Quartz Slabs (roughly one stack of Quartz needed).

To construct the portal, these must then be placed in the following
order and lit with a greek fire grenade thrown into the frame.


The portal frame does not require any specific bottom material - the bottom can even be left open just like the top center!

As you then pass through the portal, you will have finally made your way to Icaria!



The mining progression of the mod is depth based, and vanilla tools
aren’t very good in Icaria. While you can take your diamond pickaxe into
the dimension to get started, it won’t help you get through the
stronger stone types. From the top down, you will encounter these
Yellowstone, Silkstone, Sunstone, Voidshale, and Baetyl.
Each stone type has its own subset of ores that can be found within. Yellowstone requires a Chert Pickaxe to mine, Silkstone requires a Chalkos Pickaxe, Sunstone requires an Orichalcum Pickaxe, Voidshale requires a Vanadiumsteel Pickaxe, and Baetyl requires a Sideros Pickaxe.

Also found on the sides and undersides of the Icarian layers are 4
types of crystals growing on the stone types, with more different
crystals showing up the further down you go.


Icaria adds a small number of new workstations to the game. The
Kettle is used to make concoctions. A Kiln is used to make glass, loam
bricks, and to fire storage vases. Forges serve as a workstation to
smelt ores in and produce alloys. And the Grinder turns many materials
into their powder form and has some other uses as well.

Recipes for the Kettle can sometimes be found in the form of scrolls by breaking loot vases in ruins and villages.


In the dimension, the player can find wilderness ruins as well as
either damaged or ruined villages. Ruined villages have been taken over
by Arachnes; they offer little loot but are a lot safer to traverse than
damaged villages, having only very few spawners in them. Damaged
villages have a lot more loot, but also host a local revenant
population. Ruined villages always spawn with an Arachne guarding it,
whereas damaged villages always spawn with a Revenant Captain. As such,
both types of villages function as a type of disjointed dungeon.


There are 4 crops, 7 tree types and 3 mobs available for players to
farm. The available crops are Physalis, Strawberry, Spelt, and Onion.
The tree types are Plane, Populus, Cypress, Fir, Olive, Laurel, and
Droughtroot. The farmable mobs are the Aeternae, the Catoblepas, and the
Sow. Aeternae and Catoblepas eat spelt, while Sows prefer onions.

Farmland can be prepared using scythes made from dimension materials.
In order to increase your farmland’s efficiency, turn it into
fertilized soil using calcite powder. This will double the growth speed
of any crops growing on it. You can also plant vanilla crops and crops
from other mods on Icaria's farmland.


Lands of Icaria embraces combat and offers a whole set of weapons and
spells to allow players as many combat styles as possible. Bidents can
be thrown, daggers have a faster attack speed than swords, and spells
like the magic missile can deal magic damage over long distances.

There are 5 sets of armor to craft with different protection levels, and
in the future, special unique artifact armor pieces will be added as
well alongside unique weapons; both directly inspired by ancient Greek
and Egyptian mythology.

Greek fire grenades can also be crafted and used as ranged weapons
against groups of enemies, setting the ground on fire. The throwing
mechanic for them works the same as for bidents: it draws back as long
as it is being held and when the key is released, is launched


Icaria currently consists of four biomes. A dry desert, a forest
biome, steppes, and scrubland, all of which have their own sets of trees
and flowers only generating there. Different biomes also have different
special decorations, like rock spikes and cacti in the desert and stone
boulders in the scrublands.


The mobs in Lands of Icaria can be split into 5 categories

• Fantastical mobs mostly serving as ambience
• Arachnids and Insectoids
• Forest Hags that really don’t like when you mess with trees
• Animals and Predators
• Revenants (remains of the once proud civilization of Icaria)

- No support for these versions is planned.

"Is the 1.12.2 version still being developed?"

- Not at the current time. We have one unreleased update for it sitting in our repository, but this is relatively unlikely to see the light of day at the current time.

"When I use shaders, crystals look weird, glowing mobs glow differently, and other graphical issues occur."

- Try different shaders. This is a problem caused by our special visual features and there is no real way to fix them. Certain visual features (the fancy crystal lights) can be turned off in the options, but the only way to avoid all issues for sure is to not use shaders or find ones that don’t mess with block and entity lighting.

"Who will win the 2024 Formula 1 season?"

- I'd call it a tossup at the current time. Max Verstappen is definitely the favourite, but if McLaren or Ferrari can get their act together, Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc might just end up challenging him. Alot depends on whether or not Red Bull can get on top of their current issues.

Update to the latest NeoForge version. Version 21.0.96-beta or newer is needed.


  • fix villages to generate closer to each other as intended
  • fix Greek Fire Grenade failing to activate Icaria Portal depending on the angle it is thrown
  • fix monster spawn placements, previously most monster types weren't allowed to despawn, which would result in ever more decreasing monster spawns occuring on the surface layer, since most of them already spawned on lower layers due to the difference in light levels, which in return already saturated the maximum allowed number of spawns per monster type and prohibited the spawns of new ones on the surface layer during night, this is now fixed


  • update Forge to emit lava particles from its faucet
  • update Greek Fire Grenade to emit a trail of smoke particles emitted from its fuse
  • update Grinder to emit item particles based on the currently grinded item from its chute
  • update Icaria Portal to emit particles similar to the Nether Portal but in yellow
  • update Kettle to emit bubble particles whenever an active recipe is being processed
  • update Kettle to emit custom steam particles rather than smoke particles
  • update Rotten Bones Marl ore to drop either Bones or Rotten Bones
  • update emissive mobs to make their emissive elements light level dependent instead of only being day time dependent, this will allow emissive mobs on lower layers to be emissive in the dark during day time
  • update feature placements to populate the new layer based biomes, trees also generate on the second and third layer now, dead trees generate on all layers now, Cardon Cactus generate on all Desert biome layers now, Relicstone Pillars and Relicstone Rubble also generate on the third layer now to prepare for content upcoming in future updates
  • update mob spawn placements, the surface layer features Aeternae, Argan Hound, Catoblepas, Cerver, Hag and Sow now, the second layer features Hag, Myrmeke Drone, Myrmeke Queen, Myrmeke Soldier, Crystal Slug and Snull now, the third layer features Arachne Drone, Hag, Crawler Revenant and Overgrown Revenant now and the fourth layer features Scorpion, Crystal Slug, Snull, Solifguae and Vinegaroon now, the void biome features all types of Jellyfish now


  • add layer dependent biomes, each layer now consists of its own specific biome, which therefore introduces a couple of new biomes, each previous biome now splits into its layer based biomes e.g. Forest now consists of Forest Peak, Forest, Lush Forest, Lost Forest and Deep Forest from the top layer down, whereas Forest Peak represents the upper most part of the surface layer and allows for Eroded and Ruined Villages to generate, this allows us to introduce per-layer biome-detailing

The project was started before 1.13 came out.
And while 1.12 is indeed outdated, its still one of the most played versions when it comes to modding. Not to mention it is the last version before the big Fabric/Forge split in the community. And it is the last version before Mojang's "flattening" which ruined performance and means our mod likely wouldn't run anywhere near as good on 1.17.
Icaria will remain on 1.12 for now, since porting it isn't worth it yet.
