Update #15 : 04/30/2017 3:41:12 pmApr 30th, 2017

v1.7.1
  • Moved file storage to an AWS instance, and updated the program's code to reflect the change. Everything is now stored in one place and it is easier for me to maintain.
Side note: Adf.ly was being uncool with the way it manages intersital advertisements, so I changed the ad serving method to a framed banner to make it easier to download the launcher.

Google and Anti-Virus software shows it is a MALICIOUS program. Really old thread, but I recommend first checking it.

It's a batch script that I converted to an EXE file for source code obfuscation and the ability to add an icon.

However, seeing how old this is and its growth in popularity seems to have plateaued, I'm alright with releasing the source code again. It's in the description!
kewl idea for people that are getting a new pc or planning on getting a pc

If you install Forge to the portable installation's .minecraft folder, it will work fine. It's located in GameData\AppData on the USB drive. :)

It lets you play Minecraft from a USB drive so you can take it anywhere and keep the same world saves, launcher profiles, etc.

well, it isnt much of a ripoff...
you can store other games in gameband aswell and it is a clock and has designable flashing lights...
i personally store all mah homework + my server in the gameband so i dont think of it as a ripoff

The thing is, you can do all that for a fraction of the price. For $15 you can get a 32 GB USB 3.0 flash drive and store all your data on that. That's a lot more than the 3 or 4 GB the Gameband gives you. If you want a watch, you can grab a nice waterproof one for like $30 at Walmart.
Interesting mod, i think it's a great idea. but I do want to ask, does it support installing mods?

If the mod installation involves manually installing them into a JAR file (like the old way), then there is nothing special you need to do. If the mod has a JAR installer you run, just make a batch file with the following script:

@echo off
set APPDATA=%CD%\AppData
java -jar <whatever the JAR file's name is>

Alternatively, if it happens to use an EXE:

@echo off
set APPDATA=%CD%\AppData
<name of the EXE file>

Place the batch file in the same folder as AppData (along with the mod's installer) and run it.

The idea is cool, but the launcher can be able to allow you to chose where your .minecraft folder is. so really just use a flash drive.

no gameband needed. not even this.

What you're talking about operates on a per-profile basis, requires the game to be installed on each computer at least once, and requires Java to be installed on every computer you play on. My solution is universal and does not require anything to be installed on any computer you play on.
Wouldn't it be easier to just put your files on the computer you're trying to get your Minecraft files on by taking a USB and doing it that way? This seems like way to much work for something really simple.

Or atleast that's what I've done before and it literaly took 5 minutes.

This is so much more simple than doing what you're doing. You download my program, put it on a flash drive, and run it. That's it. Setup is done. All you'd need to do after that is use my program to launch Minecraft. If you want to, you can also copy your existing files over to the flash drive and continue on from there.

It lets you run Minecraft off of a flash drive so you can take your game data anywhere and use it on any computer. The only catch right now is that it only works for Windows.

Without this program (or similar) or a Gameband, it's not possible. You could always copy your .minecraft folder to the flash drive every time you move computers, but that's tedious and inconvenient.

Of course not. As you can see in the post as well as the script, it downloads the official launcher directly from Mojang. Please read the post before commenting.

If you play on multiple computers, this mod is extremely useful. If you only play on one, it's not so convenient.

Needs to work on multple platforms.

As long as you state you are not redistributing the content but instead just distributing the medium that just so happens to have the content on it, it's fine.

One way to think of that is if you put Windows on a DVD and you try to sell it. Don't say you are selling Windows (because you don't own it), say that you are selling the DVD it's on. That's a loophole and it's even encouraged in some parts of the Internet.

I'm planning to have this work on Mac and Linux (through a Java executable), but it might take a while depending on schoolwork and available free time.

I wouldn't risk doing something like trying a loophole like that. It's easier for everyone if I just have the program I make download the launcher from Mojang the first time it's run. That way I'm not distributing any of Mojang's content but my program can still use it. I did that with this program, but for some reason several people don't seem to get that.
You can do the exact same thing with the new standalone launcher (which I don't use due to it not cooperating with Forge). Same with the older, lighter-weight launcher that we used before it decided to download java and not use our installed version. On top of that, after trying it, it doesn't even work! It opens up a command prompt window and then closes it saying "Minecraft downloaded! Launching...", when it never even launches. An investigation leads me to the bin folder being vacant (downloaded to my harddisk since I don't use flash drives) with no files in there.

It's using the new launcher to accomplish the portability, as is stated in the post. However, what the new launcher does not to automatically is set the AppData to a directory on the flash drive. You can manually set the Minecraft data folder to a directory on the drive, but that's per-profile and you'd have to do it for every new launcher profile you create.

It's strange that it's not working for you; it's worked flawlessly on every computer I've tried it on. What OS are you using? BITSAdmin (what I use to download the launcher from Mojang) might have been removed in Windows 10.
I'm using it under Win8.1 x64.

Strange, it's worked on every computer I've run it on. Try running the latest verison.

Are you using an admin account? BITSAdmin *might* not run on normal user accounts.
I am using an admin account. It didn't even work when I rightclicked and clicked "Run as admin"
