The first Methodist preacher arrived in Duluth in the early autumn of 1869. Then, the town was just a fledgling hamlet composed of many smaller plattings. Reverend Harvey Webb held congregations at the only schoolhouse until in 1870 when he took a loan out and built the first Methodist church in Duluth. The building served the congregation well for many years, but as Duluth's population exploded so did the congregation. In 1893, they moved into a new church that they had built directly behind their old one. This is the building you see in the showcase. At the same time, they had the old 1870 church disassembled and moved many, many miles north to Hibbing where it was rebuilt. In 1966 the congregation moved once again to a new church, nicknamed Coppertop church, and in 1969 the old 1893 one was demolished. Now all that remains is a parking lot.
