I created this historical replica ship, Flying Cloud, with as much attention to detail and historical accuracy as I could. A lack of records and knowledge as to the interior of the ship made this an impossible task, but I tried to make an interior that was reflective on the interiors of ships at the time.
If you have and comments or suggestions, please let me know. I would love to improve this ship in any way that I can.
A Brief History:Flying Cloud was the most famous of clipper ships built by Donald McKay. She set the world's sailing record for the fastest passage from New York, around Cape Horn, and up again to San Francisco. The trip took 89 days and 8 hours. Normally this trip would take approximately 200 days. Flying Cloud held this record for an incredible 135 years! (1854-1989) The ship is also very famous for having a female navigator (Eleanor Creesy) , uncommon at the time. Built in Boston in 1851, Flying Cloud originally cost $50,000, but was purchased for $90,000 by Grinnell, Minturn & Co. while still being constructed. Flying Cloud was 235 feet long and 41 feet wide at the widest point of the hull. On June 19, 1874, she went ashore on the Beacon Island Bar and was sold. She was later burned for scrap metal.
Thanks for your interest. Feel free to use the ship, but please give credit and let me know.
