Hey, here are some new advances on my project to rebuild Rouffach as it was before the revolution!
I've made quite a bit of progress in two weeks, starting with the impasse des Orfèvres, which owes its name to the fact that representatives of this trade used to live there.
Hey! Voici de nouvelles avancées sur mon projet de reconstruire Rouffach tel que c'étais avant la révolution!
J'ai pas mal avancé en deux semaines, avec d'abord l'impasse des Orfèvres qui doit son nom au fait que des représentants de ce métier y habitaient autrefois.
Here is the Saint Nicolas chapel! It was a rather important chapel for Rouffach: it was the ossuary chapel of the city, which sheltered in a crypt piles of bones of corpses. There is no information about the date of its construction. Every year, on All Saints' Day and the Day of the Dead, it was carefully disinfected.
Unfortunately, the revolution struck and ravaged the town of Rouffach in 1793. The cemetery was ransacked and a doctor from the town insisted on taking the land south of the church, which he said could be enlarged by demolishing the old chapel-ossuary of Saint Nicolas (which he described as an old hovel). Unfortunately, his opinion was followed and Rouffach lost one of its most ancient monuments. The only traces of this chapel are drawings which represent it before its demolition, I could thus reproduce it rather faithfully with what it must have resembled!
Voici la chapelle Saint Nicolas! C'étais une chapelle assez importante pour Rouffach: il s'agissait de la chapelle ossuaire de la ville, qui abritait dans une crypte des tas d'ossements de cadavres! On ne possède aucune information quand à sa date de construction. Tous les ans, à la Toussaint et le jour des Morts, elle était soigneusement désinfectée.
Malheureusement, la terreur frappa et ravagera la ville de Rouffach en 1793. Le cimetière a été saccagé et un médecin de la ville insista pour prendre le terrain situé au sud de l'église qu’il disait pouvoir être agrandi par la démolition de l’ancienne chapelle-ossuaire de Saint Nicolas (qu’il qualifie de vieille masure). Son avis fut malheureusement suivi et Rouffach perdit un de ses plus antiques monuments. Les seules traces de cette chapelle sont des dessins qui la représente avant sa démolition, j'ai pu donc la reproduire assez fidèlement à ce qu'elle devait ressembler!
