The eleven rock churches of New Jerusalem (alternative name for Lalibela) together form one of the most important pilgrimage sites of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. The special thing about the churches built in the 12th or 13th century is that they were not literally built, but rather carved into the ground. There are very few comparable structures of this type in the world.

In terms of shape, the building resembles typical Graeco-Roman temple buildings and thus also early church buildings and thus differs significantly from various North African building types. The main building block is baked clay (terracotta). Red sandstone was used for accents. The windows are without panes or similar fillings.

Die elf Felsenkirchen von Neu Jerusalem (alternativer Name für Lalibela) bilden zusammen einer der wichtigsten Pilgerstätte der äthiopische orthodoxen Kirche. Das besondere an den im 12 oder 13 Jahrhundert erbauten Kirchen ist, dass diese nicht im wörtlichen Sinne erbaut wurden, sondern vielmehr in den Boden gemeißelt wurden. Weltweit gibt es nur sehr wenige vergleichbare Bauwerke dieser Art.

Das Gebäude gleicht in der Form durchaus typischen gräkoromanischen Temeplbauten und somit auch frühen Kirchenbauten und unterscheidet sich damit deutlich von diversen nordafrikanischen Bauarten. Der Hauptbaublock ist gebrannter Ton (Terrakotta). Für Akzente wurde roter Sandstein genutzt. Die Fenster sind ohne Scheiben oder ähnliche Füllungen.
