She was laid down on 20th October 1896, launched on 21st March 1898, completed on 18th March 1899, and arrived in Yokosuka, Japan on 17th May 1899. She was named after Mount Asama. She spent her early years participating in fleet reviews as well as travelling to Europe.

During the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905), she was assigned to the 2nd Fleet and participated in numerous actions including: the Battle of Chemulpo Bay (9th February 1904), the Battle of the Yellow Sea (10th August 1904), and the Battle of Tsushima (May 1905). After the war, she was used as a Reviewing Ship and carried Emperor Meiji during the Victory Review on 15th September 1905.

The ship continued its active service and by 1908 was again the Reviewing Ship in the Imperial Naval Review on 17th November, although she was originally assigned to the 4th Division of the 2nd Fleet. The commanding officer of the ship is Captain Tarozo Yamasumi from the 11th class of the Imperial Naval Academy who commanded the ship since 15th May 1908.
