The actual Basilica has been under construction since 1882 and is due to be completed in 2026.

Gaudí was a crazy architect, truly a visionary of his time. He imagined structures that still look novel and inventive nearly 100 years after his death.

The Sagrada Família has three facades that mirror the three major events in the life of Jesus Christ.

• The Nativity Facade
  

    - looks lumpy because the stone is meant to evoke the organic
    - sculptures tell the story of the birth and early life of Christ
    - faces north-east so the morning light filters through (stained glass is predominantly cool)

• The Passion Facade

    - looks stark and angular to evoke the brutal nature of suffering
    - sculptures tell the story of the "passion"
    - faces south-west so the evening light filters through (stained glass is predominantly warm)

• The Glory Facade (faces south-east)

    - main entrance
    - still uncompleted (irl)
    - meant to represent the ascension and the judgment
