The Bismarck was the pride of the Nazi Kriegsmarine for the brief time it was in operation. The largest battleship built by a European power, it was designed to serve as a surface commerce raider in an attempt to starve Britain of wartime material. During a breakout attempt in the Denmark Strait in 1941, Bismarck sunk the pride of the British navy, the battlecruiser HMS Hood, initiating a pursuit by a large fleet of British ships. Damaged by obsolete Fairy Swordfish launched from the HMS Ark Royal, The Bismarck was eventually destroyed by fire from the HMS King Prince of Wales and the HMS Rodney, which shelled the ship at point blank range.
