History up to November 1908:

Originally the Russian Borodino-class pre-dreadnought battleship Oryol (“Eagle”). She was ordered on 7th November 1899 and started construction in Saint Petersburg on 1st June 1900. She was launched on 19th July 1902 and commissioned into the Imperial Russian Navy Baltic Fleet by October 1904.

During the Russo Japanese War, she was part of the Second Pacific Squadron under Vice Admiral Zinovy Rozhetsvensky, tasked with reinforcing the Russian Naval Forces in the Far East. The ship fired the first shots of the Battle of Tsushima (27th May 1905). She was the only Borodino-class Battleship to survive the battle albeit badly damaged and was surrendered to the Japanese after the battle.

She was taken to Maizuru Naval Arsenal for repairs and was renamed Iwami on June 6. The ship was later taken to Kure Naval Arsenal to be rebuilt. During this period, her superstructure was reduced in height and her funnels were shortened. Her secondary and torpedo armaments were replaced except for the 12-inch guns which were retained. The ship was recommissioned on the 2nd November 1907 and was assigned to the 1st Fleet.

She participated in the 1908 Fleet Maneuvers and is present in the Imperial Naval Review on 17th November 1908 as part of the 3rd Division of the 1st Fleet under Vice Admiral Hikohachi Yamada. The commanding officer of the ship is Captain Hajime Ishibashi from the 10th class of the Imperial Naval Academy who commanded the ship since 15th May 1908.
